In 1907, leading personalities and art lovers created the "Society of the Friends of Brussels Museums". In 1932, this society could take pride in having offered 21 paintings to the Museums. And not just any paintings: works by Bruegel the Elder, Cranach, Van orley, the Master of Flémalle, Jordaens, Saverys and others. Renewed impetus was provided in 1967 by Count René Boël. He succeeded in summoning energy and influence round the "Friends" that would lead to a new Museum of Modern Art which opened in October 1984. Today, the Society brings together all those who care about museum activities and endeavours to rouse and cultivate the concern of members towards museums.

The Friends support the Museums in a variety of ways.
For instance, many indefatigable multilingual volunteers man the reception facilities for visitors every day that the Museums are open, including week-ends.

Financial support is provided for the projects of the educational services and for publications. The Friends organize regular guided tours and lectures, as well as cultural trips and excursions for their members. Other objectives include contributing to the improvement of the premises, the conditions under which the works are kept and exhibited, enhancing the prestige of the Museums through appropriate promotion, and enriching the collections through acquisitions. The possibilities to attain these objectives obviously depend on the number and the generosity of the Friends.
